You are looking for a new winter jacket to meet your style but getting lost in too many options out on the internet? Whether you’re preparing to travel to a colder climate or just looking to buy a new winter jacket because you’re not happy with your current one for whatever reason, we’ve got you covered with this quick guide. Check out our tips below on how to choose a winter jacket online.

Ask yourself where you will use it the most

The first step is pretty self explanatory but still worth mentioning as there is a high chance you will get overwhelmed by all the different types of winter jackets you will come across. So before you get too distracted, focus on where you will mainly wear it: Your next outdoor adventure? To work or when going out for a walk around the city? Maybe you need a versatile one for multiple occasions? Consider your needs from the type of winter jacket you’re looking to buy.

Protection comes first

It is only natural wanting to look trendy and fashionable, but when it comes to a winter jacket, your priority should be staying warm and protected against cold weather conditions throughout winter. Think of it as a long term investment and try to go for that timeless, better quality jacket you can wear for the years ahead.

Check the materials

Shell
Shell is the very outer layer of your garment that comes into direct contact with the external environment. Thus it should be composed not only of fabric but also seams and closures that will provide you protection against moisture, wind and UV radiation.

Insulation
The insulating layer retains heat by trapping air, making it a crucial element of winter jackets especially made for freezing cold weather. There are mainly two types of insulated jackets: down and synthetic. Down comes from the fluffy coating underneath the feathers of ducks and geese. It is a warm and lightweight material which makes the garment it is used in compressible and easy to carry around. A down insulated winter jacket will last you a long time if cared for properly and washed according to the care label. On the downside, however, down doesn’t hold out well against moisture so it might not be a good choice if you know you’re going to be exposed to a good amount of moisture. Synthetic insulation on the other hand is water-resistant and quick-drying, making it ideal for wet conditions. It is also easy to care and more affordable compared to down, though not as lightweight and long lasting.

Lining
Linings often get overlooked when they in fact make a significant contribution to your jacket’s performance. Mesh is lightweight and breathable which is a great complement to a sports jacket.
Try to pick a blanket, sherpa or shearling if you want to feel cozy and comfortable. If you’re after the warmest and most durable of all and can handle some bulkiness, quilted linings are your best chance.

“Extras” for extra warmth and versatility

Don’t forget to check the product images and description thoroughly. You might come across some features you didn’t know could save you so much trouble. Thumbhole cuffs or elastic wristbands, for example, are great for keeping the cold out whereas a winter jacket with detachable hood can come in handy if versatility is your priority. Look for functional pockets to keep your belongings safe or storm flaps for extra protection against wind and rain. Even a detail as small as pit zippers may be a life-changer if you’re one of those who sweat like crazy under your arms.

Consider going for a size bigger

One last thing you should consider before clicking that “Add to Cart” button: the size. Don’t be so quick to choose your usual size right away and make sure to check out the size chart. If the item is not described as oversized or the brand’s overall sizing runs large, going for a bigger size can be a good idea so you have enough room to move around freely with layers underneath.

You may even go for the biggest! 🙂
